Bates Smart has designed an 8 story, 98-bed student accommodation facility in Regent Street, Chippendale, within close
proximity to UTS, The University of Sydney and University of Notre Dame.
The building maximizes the allowable height and sits well within the existing streetscape. It has a corten steel skin with a warm natural patina consistent in colour with the surrounding masonry facades. The steel provides the building with a robust and highly durable facade.
Along with neighbouring buildings, the inner walls define the edges of a communal landscaped courtyard. The ground floor accommodates internal and external social spaces designed to encourage a sense of community. There is direct access from the internal communal area into the outdoor courtyard, and a covered outdoor dining and BBQ facility.
Typical floors contain two six-bed cluster apartments in each wing on the ‘L’, and two studios at the corner of the plan. Each apartment has a communal living/dining area with full kitchen facilities while studios have their own kitchenette.
Over 50% of the bedrooms are orientated towards the internal courtyard to maximize acoustic and visual privacy, while both the studios and the communal living areas are located on street frontages and have a north or north-easterly aspect.
