Newton Road

Back in 2009, this once grand and well-proportioned semi-detached Victorian house in London’s Westbourne Grove conservation area was a shadow of its former self. Many years of insensitive, piecemeal alterations and extensions had taken a heavy toll; the house had become a maze of small rooms, narrow halls and stairways with bizarre level variations contributing to its dysfunctional layout. The original side passage between the house and its neighbour had been filled by several additions and a large 1970s rear extension dominated the back of the house.
